Material Preparation

The materials used in teaching your child to read are extremely simple. They are based on many years of work on the part of a very large team of child brain developmentalists who studied how the human brain grows and functions. They are designed in complete recognition of the fact that reading is a brain function. They recognize the capabilities and limitations of the tiny child's visual apparatus and are designed to meet all of his needs from visual crudeness to visual sophistication and from brain function to brain learning.

All materials should be made on fairly stiff white posterboard so that they will stand up under the not-always-gentle handling they will receive.

You will need a good supply of white posterboard cut into large strips, approximately 6" x 22" (15.24 cm x 55.88 cm). If possible, purchase these already cut to the size you want. This will save you a lot of cutting, which is much more time-consuming than writing words. Don't become obsessed over the exact size of these cards, but consider what size posterboard is available where you live and use common sense.

You will also need a large, red, felt-tipped marker. Get the widest tip available-the fatter the marker the better.

Now write each of the words on a white posterboard strip. Make the letters 3" high. Use lower-case letters except in the case of a proper noun, which, of course, always begins with a capital letter. Otherwise you will always use lowercase lettering since this is the way words appear in books.

Make certain your letters are very bold. The stroke should be approximately 1/2" wide or wider. This intensity is important to help make it easier for your child to see the word.

Make your lettering neat and clear. Use print, never cursive writing. Make sure you place the word on the card so that there is a border of/z" or more all around the word. This will give you space for your fingers when you hold up the card.
